In a clinical study conducted in the USA, magnesium oxide administered at a dose of 520 mg elemental magnesium/day caused an increase in magnesium levels inside oral epithelial cells of 1.9 mEq/L, whereas magnesium citrate (295.8 mg/day) resulted in an increase of 0.7 mEq/L (≈2.7× greater increase)*.
